About the University of North Texas

Joshua C. Chilton established the Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute in 1890, opening the school above a hardware store in Denton, Texas. In 1891, the school moved to land donated by a group of businessmen where a fence kept livestock from strolling around the campus. The name of the school changed to the North Texas Normal College with the word north added due to a clerical error in the legislation that recognized teacher diplomas. A new charter officially changed the name to North Texas.

Although enrollment grew steadily, it dropped off significantly during World War I as men left to join the Armed Services. Enrollment also fell during the Great Depression although the school was able to remain open with government funding. In 1923, the school name changed again to North Texas Teachers College and, in the 1930s, it became the first school to offer adult education in the area.

Once again, enrollment dropped during World War II. The school supported the war efforts with military training on campus and a civilian pilot training course. Another name change occurred in 1949 when the school became North Texas State College and again in 1961 when it became North Texas State University and, in 1988, became the University of North Texas, reflecting the school’s significance for graduate studies and research.

Today, US News & World Report ranks the school 19th in their Top 100 schools and the school has a $1.65 billion impact on the Dallas-Fort Worth area each year. It has been named a Best Buy for 23 consecutive years and The Princeton Review named it one of the Best in the West. It is also a Tier 1 Research University.
