The University of Nevada Las Vegas offers a Master of Education in Special Education that allows students to concentrate their studies in Intellectual Disabilities. The program is designed for those who wish to move into leadership roles in special education while gaining an understanding of the special needs of those who may have intellectual disability that can be barriers to learning. Students gain an understanding of current issues and trends in special education while also gaining an understanding of disorders on the autism spectrum. They are able to identify and differentiate between treatments, both science-based and non-science-based designed to assist those on the autism spectrum.

The program includes an understanding of development, academic, social, career and other characteristics of individuals who fall on the autism spectrum and the special support they may need. Graduates are able to support parents, individuals and other professionals in planning for a transition to adulthood in areas of employment, daily life and community activities that allow individuals on the spectrum to participate fully.

Students are able to choose sub-plan tracks to further individualize their education. Subplan tracks include:

Master of Science – Educational Psychology

The Master of Science in Educational Psychology is designed for those that want to enhance classroom skills or pursue advanced studies in psychology related to education. or who wish to apply their knowledge in government or private sector settings. Students gain an understanding of key theories related to learning, cognition, and development as well as how to critically evaluate research studies. They will be able to develop plans for test construction, item, and test revision to enhance reliability as well as viability of a study while also gaining an understanding of how to implement evidence-based intervention strategies. Courses required for this program include:

  • Descriptive and Inferential Statistics: An Introduction
  • Foundations of Learning & Cognition
  • Human Growth & Development
  • Psychometrics I
  • Research Methods

In addition, students must complete 12 credits of electives. They may also choose from a thesis or internship to complete the degree.

About University of Nevada Las Vegas

In 1951, the post-war boom grew Las Vegas’ population to more than 50,000 people which led to the University of Nevada Reno to create an extension program in the growing town. The first classes were held in the dressing rooms of the Las Vegas High School auditorium with 28 students. In 1954, the Southern Regional Division of the University of Nevada was founded, more commonly known as Nevada Southern. In an effort to break away from the Reno campus, students adopted the Rebel name and mascot and residents began to demand a campus of their own.

In 1957, the first classes were held on a new campus built on an 80-acre parcel along Maryland Parkway. Even with the new campus, Nevada Southern remained under the control of the University of Nevada in Reno. Students were required to complete one semester at the Reno campus in order to graduate. In 1964, Nevada Southern held its own graduation ceremony, calling it the “Centennial Class” in honor of the 100th anniversary of the state of Nevada. In 1965, the school became Nevada Southern University, offering its own curriculum and, in 1968, the school was given equal status as the University of Nevada Reno. The name of the school was changed again in 1969 to the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

Today, there are more than 25,000 undergraduate and 4,200 graduate students attending the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Approximately 30 percent of those students are first-generation college students. US News & World Report ranks the school first among diverse universities for undergraduates and it is the first four-year university in Nevada to reach Hispanic enrollment of 25 percent.

The University of Nevada Las Vegas is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Accreditation indicates that the school meets or exceeds criteria determined by the Commission that indicates students receive the highest quality education possible. In addition, during periodic reviews to confirm the school continues to meet those criteria, any area identified as needing improvement are addressed by the school as soon as possible. University of Nevada Las Vegas Application Requirements

An application for admission must be submitted to the Graduate College and the Department of Counselor Education, School Psychology. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended must be provided and there is a minimum GPA of 2.75 for all undergraduate work as well as a 3.0 GPA for the last two years of undergraduate work.

Three letters of recommendation must be submitted as well as a writing sample. Those selected for the program must also undergo an extensive, structured interview.

University of Nevada Las Vegas Tuition & Financial Aid

Full-time tuition for graduate programs at the University of Las Vegas is $6,748 per semester for Nevada residents and $30,048 per semester for non-residents.

The Financial Aid Office is available to assist students with covering the cost of tuition. Nearly 75 percent of students received some type of financial aid. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify and the form must be renewed annually. Students may be offered scholarships and grants as well as graduate assistantships or fellowships.
