The West Tennessee Normal School was created by an act created by the Tennessee Legislature in 1909. The goal of the school was to educate teachers. Memphis was chosen for the school due to its proximity to the railroad which would allow students to travel back home easily. The school was added to an already existing medical school with a department of pharmacy, law and dentistry. By 1913, all departments were under the control of the West Tennessee Normal School except the law department. In 1925, the name of the school changed to West Tennessee State Teachers College and became Memphis State College in 1941. The school gained university status in 1957.
