About the University of Louisiana at Monroe
The University of Louisiana at Monroe is a large public university in Monroe, Louisiana. Established in 1931 as a small college, it used the name Ouachita Parish Junior College and served as a two-year school. This would change just a few years later when it became the Northeast Center of Louisiana State University. Though it used other names over the years, it continued operating as a junior college until 1950. The end of the 1960s also saw the university establish its first doctoral programs, which would eventually lead to it becoming Northeast Louisiana University and the University of Louisiana at Monroe or ULM. ULM is now a full member of the University of Louisiana System.
U.S. News and World Report ranked ULM as one of the top 300 schools in the United States, and Washington Monthly ranked the university as the 290th best graduate school in the country. ULM also ranks as the 39th best university in the south and the 160th best online university for bachelor’s students on the lists issued by U.S. News and World Report. The Natural History Museum located on the ULM campus has more than six million specimens on display and in its archives, some of which are available to students in its degree programs.
The University of Louisiana at Monroe Accreditation Details
With regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), ULM can grant financial aid packages to students who submit an application and need assistance. This is the same accreditation that lets students transfer to ULM and submit their transcripts to get credit for their classes. The psychology programs offered by the university do not have accreditation but do meet some of the requirements necessary for students who want to get professional licenses after they graduate.
The University of Louisiana at Monroe Application Requirements
The Louisiana Board of Regents developed a core curriculum for high school students that includes 19 units of math, English, foreign language, life/health science, and social science classes. Students applying to the university’s undergrad programs must submit transcripts that show they completed this core. They will also need to create an admission account online and use that account to both submit an application and pay the $20 application fee. Undergrads can then supply their transcripts and test scores. ULM also requires a completed proof of immunization form filled out by a doctor for students who will take classes in Monroe or on another campus.
ULM asks that prospective graduate students apply to its graduate school and submit a second application to the psychology program. This program will accept students who have a cumulative undergrad grade point average of 3.0 or those who have a GPA of 2.7 and a minimum GRE score of 270. Students can also multiply their GRE scores by their GPAs to get a figure. As long as this figure is 800 or higher, the university will accept them. Incoming ULM graduate students can submit their applications online and pay their application fees at the same time.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Louisiana undergrads attending ULM pay $8,734 per year for tuition and fees. The nonresident rate that the university charges will increase this cost to $20,834 per year for nonresident undergrads. Students who want to live on the ULM campus pay an average of $7,868 each year for room and board also. There is a nonresident rate for graduate students too of $21,158 per year. Graduate students who are residents of Louisiana pay $9,058 per year. Those students can also live on the ULM campus, but they’ll pay the same rate that undergrads do for room and board. Online students pay $400 per credit hour in an undergraduate program and $500 per credit hour in a graduate program.
Students can use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to get grants and other types of financial aid. That aid can come from the state or federal government and from the university itself. ULM has an assistantship program that hires graduate students to work on campus in positions that involve helping professors or students. There are unsubsidized loans for those students too. Undergrads can qualify for some of the ULM scholarship and grant programs and get government aid in the form of loans and grants. Those with more need will also qualify for work-study, which gives them jobs that require they work up to 10 hours each week. All ABA and psychology students attending the University of Louisiana at Monroe can get financial aid.
