ABA Programs Available at St. Bonaventure University

St. Bonaventure University appears in our ranking of the Top 30 Online Master’s in School Counseling.

At St. Bonaventure University, students can choose from a wide range of degree programs that will help them study applied behavior analysis at the graduate level. One of the programs designed for undergrads is a major in psychology. Up through 2013, every student who finished this program either went on to graduate school or found work in a psychology field. Students can join the honors society Psi Chi and become a member of the Psych Club. This program features internship and research opportunities as well as classes such as Introduction to Psychology and Introduction to Biopsychology. It is also available as a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science program.

The university’s adolescence education major appeals to those who want to work with children on the autism spectrum in school or clinical settings. Students can get certificates to teach in 7-12 grade settings across New York through this program. It asks students to take at least 30 credits of courses in one teaching subject area and some required education courses. Those education classes include Managing Instruction and Behavior in Secondary Education, Instructional Design for All Learners, Designing and Delivering Instruction and Evaluating Learners and Learning.

In the childhood studies major, students learn how to work with both their students and their families. The final year of the program includes a long internship that can take place over the full year. Students will work with their advisors to determine their career goals and find internships that can help them achieve those goals. Basic Instructional Design is a course that majors take, which runs along with a lab. It teaches students how to instruct children of different ages on specific tasks. They will also need to take either Human Development and Learning or Adolescent Development and Learning along with other required education courses.

Students can also earn a degree in behavioral neuroscience, which includes several courses with research requirements. This is one of the top programs for those who want to study ABA in graduate school and those who want to get ABA certification. It looks at how the brain determines the way people act and includes courses on disabilities and disorders. Students will take a Behavioral Neuroscience Seminar and other classes, including Maladaptive Behavior, Cognition, Evolutionary Biology, and Sensation and Perception.

A CACREP-accredited online Master of Science in Education School Counseling is also offered, either on campus in late afternoons or evenings, or completely online.

About St. Bonaventure University

St. Bonaventure University is a private university affiliated with the Catholic Church through the Franciscan Brothers. Established in 1858, it opened after the Brothers moved to Allegheny after the town’s founder asked for help. Known as St. Bonaventure’s College, it became a university in 1950 after New York granted the college a new charter. The 1990s saw the university facing a number of issues as enrollment dropped and it had limited funds. Its new president helped the university survive and become one of the top private campuses in the state.

Also called SBU, the university is now large enough that the state considers it a small town and gave the campus a post office and zip code. It has more than 500 acres of land and a number of buildings that include residence halls for students. Though SBU maintains a close affiliation with the Catholic Church, its more than 2,000 students include those from other faiths.

St. Bonaventure University Accreditation Details

SBU students can use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior to starting at the university because it has regional accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Any student who earned credits at another college or while in high school can use this accreditation to transfer those credits to SBU too. The education classes that many ABA students take have accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) also.

St. Bonaventure University Application Requirements

More than 90% of SBU graduates reported that they were satisfied with their experiences there, and 95% of its graduates find work or head back to school within six months of finishing their degrees. One of the top factors that the university uses when accepting students is their transcripts. It looks for those who took college classes in high school and those who completed a college-prep program. This program will include a full four years of English, social studies and history classes, three years of science with lab and math classes and at least two years of a foreign language. The university offers language exams that students can take, which may help them test out and avoid taking any additional foreign language courses.

Students applying as incoming freshmen can use the SBU or the Common Application, but transfer students can only use the SBU application. They will enter a name, email address and date of birth to create a new account. Once they get an email from the university, they can use those accounts to apply. SBU allows students to report their test scores and add an unofficial transcript to the application but requires official scores and transcripts before the semester starts.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Part-time students taking up to 11 credit hours per semester pay $1,020 per credit hour. Full-time students pay this same rate for any credits they take above 18 and a rate of $34,336 per year for their other classes. Room plans start at $7,200 a year but vary in price based on how many students share the same room. There are also three meal plans available that start at $5,950 per year and give students unlimited access to the university’s dining halls. Students who live on the SBU campus must purchase a meal plan. SBU also charges students $520 per credit hour for any classes they take in the summer.

Incoming freshmen receive financial aid packages with an average of more than $30,000 in financial support. SBU accepts veteran benefits and other funds given to those on active duty and has scholarships for incoming students. There is a $24,000 presidential scholarship and a $22,000 friars scholarship. An achievement grant worth $16,000 goes to students with a grade point average of at least 2.5, and the university’s sibling grant provides students with siblings also enrolled with an extra $250 per year. Grants and scholarships are available from St. Bonaventure University as are government funds and programs for students in its ABA program.
