Applied Behavior Analysis Programs at Seton Hall University

Seton Hall University offers both a graduate program and a certificate option for students who want to study applied behavior analysis (ABA). Both programs follow the course sequence established by the Board Certified Analyst Board (BCAB) and help students prepare for the board’s licensing exam. The certificate program is open to students in the Master of Arts (MA) in Special Education program and those who have a master’s degree. It allows students to do ABA research in some of the on-campus labs.

The MA in ABA program features a course sequence that includes six semesters of work. Students typically do an ABA practicum in the second semester and their two remaining practicums in the summer when they have more free time. They can start working on their thesis projects or papers in their first years. Some of the classes in the ABA program include Introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis, Applied Behavior Analysis Principles, Supervision and Management in ABA and Autism Spectrum Disorders: Theory, Treatment and Practice. ABA majors can also take electives on assessing and treating the needs of those on the autism spectrum.

In the university’s MA in Special Education program, students can become licensed teachers in New Jersey. They can work with elementary or secondary school students in special education settings to assist those with disabilities. This program features 21 credits that let students get a teaching endorsement and 12 credits from a concentration track. The ABA concentration includes courses such as Introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis, Measurement and Experimental Design in Applied Behavior Analysis, Basic Applications of Applied Behavior Analysis and Assessment and Intervention in Applied Behavior Analysis. It includes up to three practicums too that allow students to work in public or private schools, ABA agencies, and hospitals.

Also available is an MA in Psychological Studies that includes 36 credits. Students take 24 credits of required psychology classes and 12 credits from a concentration such as school psychology or marriage and family therapy. The university allows students to work with an advisor within the program to create an individualized concentration too. Psychology of Human Development. Abnormal Psychology, Multicultural Counseling and Psychology and Tests and Measurement are some of the required courses that students take. In the school counseling concentration, students also take Introduction to School Psychology: History, Systems and Foundations, Research Methods, Biological Bases of Behavior and Counseling and Community Agencies.

Seton Hall University is a private university in New Jersey that is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. It was named for Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton who was the aunt of the university’s founder, Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley. Bayley worked with other members of the Church to create a new university that would offer both education training as well as religion classes. They believed that this would help spread the Catholic faith to other parts of the world. U.S. News and World Report included Seton Hall University on a list of the country’s best colleges. Seton Hall University Accreditation Details

SHU has the specialty accreditation that some degree programs need and regional accreditation. It has regional accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Students attending a school with this type of accreditation can use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The graduate programs available from SHU in ABA and special education have accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) also.

Seton Hall University Application Requirements

The university’s MA in ABA program requires a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in an undergraduate program and a bachelor’s degree in psychology, education or a similar field. Incoming students need to provide transcripts that show all the undergrad courses they took and their grades. Their transcripts should come from their previous schools and have the seal on the transcript, which comes in a sealed envelope. SHU asks for an official TOEFL/GRE/MAT score, two letters of recommendation and a personal statement that explains why the student wants to study ABA at the university. They also need to supply a writing sample from a former class of 10 pages or more. Those who make it through the first round of applications will also interview for a spot in the ABA program.

SHU does not have an application deadline for students but requires that they meet the enrollment steps that each program has. The special education program requires two letters that come from references who are familiar with the student from a professional or academic setting and an official transcript. They need to submit a resume, a two-page goals statement and a GRE or MAT score from within the last five years. SHU will accept a graduate school transcript in place of a test score. There is also a $75 application fee. Within two weeks of receiving the application, Seton Hall will contact those who made it to the interview round. The psychological sciences major features the same admissions requirements.

Tuition and Financial Aid

ABA and special education students pay the same rates in the SHU graduate certificate and degree programs. They pay $1,260 per credit hour in an education program and $1,310 in an arts and science program such as the psychology major. The university does not charge a higher rate for non-residents. A $300 fee is due when the student starts a program. Other fees include a $400 technology and $485 university fee, both of which are due each semester. Part-time students pay only $275 in fees every semester. The university also charges a $275 computing fee each semester.

Seton Hall University graduate students can get loans when they file the FAFSA. These are unsubsidized federal loans that come to $20,500 every year. This program gives students up to six months to begin repaying their loans once they graduate or quit school. SHU has employment opportunities for students too that include research, teaching, and graduate assistant jobs. The ABA programs available at Seton Hall University accept alternative loans and other external funding sources too.
