Oregon State University is a large public research university located in Corvallis, Oregon, about thirty minutes away from the state capital of Salem. The university offers degrees in hundreds of areas and is particularly well known for its forestry and engineering programs.

The university’s School of Education offers a number of degrees related to behavioral analysis both online and in person. At the undergraduate level, the school offers a double degree in education, with students required to take a Bachelor’s in Education as well as a bachelor’s elsewhere on campus. This model allows students interested in behavioral analysis to pursue a major as well as learn about education in the classroom.

Undergraduates can earn a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from Oregon State University’s Portland campus, combining coursework in the psychological sciences with the College of Psychological Science’s internship program that pairs students with organizations in Corvallis, Bend or Portland.

A Bachelor’s of Science in Sociology is another good option for students interested in pursuing a career in behavioral analysis or counseling. Oregon State University Accreditation Details

Oregon State University’s undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs are accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). The university’s School of Education, which houses its counseling degrees, was previously accredited by the now-defunct NCATE. The school is now accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), with its next site visit in 2021. Graduate-level counseling programs are additionally accredited by CACREP.

Oregon State University Application Requirements

Applicants to Oregon State University need to submit their SAT or ACT scores electronically from the testing organization or as part of their official high school transcripts. Applicants to in-person classes must also submit what the university calls an insight resume, a description of the candidate’s participation in activities, academic and personal achievements, along with any relevant experiences and talents. Applicants to the university’s online or hybrid programs need not submit the resume.

Students interested in a Master’s of Counseling must apply online to the Oregon State University Graduate School. Applicants to this program must have a bachelor’s degree with a cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 at the undergraduate level, with a psychology background preferred. In addition to college transcripts and a CV or resume, applicants must submit three letters of recommendation and a statement of their objective in earning the degree.

Because of the sensitive nature of counseling, the application procedure is rigorous and potential students who meet the minimum requirements must participate in an in-person interview to determine their suitability for the program. Unfortunately, international students are unable to enroll in the university’s counseling programs.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The base undergraduate tuition rate for Oregon State University is $312 per credit hour for residents of Oregon and $967 per credit hour for non-residents. Some programs and colleges, such as the College of Engineering and the College of Forestry, charge slightly more per credit hour to support their programs.

Graduate students who are residents of Oregon pay $479 per credit hour, while non-residents pay $925 per credit hour. Again, some programs and colleges are more expensive. Students enrolling in the hybrid Master’s of Counseling or Ph.D. in Counseling pay a total of $589 per credit hour.

There are a number of financial aid opportunities available for Oregon State University students at all degree levels. In addition to FAFSA and private loans, numerous scholarships are available. Some of these are state-administered and others are administered by the university’s scholarship office.

Students enrolled in online or hybrid programs may also take advantage of the Ecampus Financial Hardship Grant, which provides funds for students experiencing unexpected difficulties that make them unable to pay for school.
