About North Carolina State University
In 1887, North Carolina opened as the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts as part of the Morrill Act. The school was designed to provide instruction in mechanical arts, agriculture, and engineering to families of the working class. By 1894, all students were required to participate in military drills which were also required under the Morrill Act.
The name of the school changed to the North Carolina State College of Architecture and Engineering in 1917. During the Great Depression, the school suffered financially as students were unable to enroll. Only funding from the state legislature kept the school from closing. The name of the school changed again to the University of North Carolina when it became part of the University System. Enrollment grew and, by 1917, had reached 2,000, most of which were enrolled in extension and engineering. The beginning of World War II, however, lowered enrollment significantly as students left to join the war effort. The school managed the financial issue by hosting military detachments and training exercises. When the war ended, however, enrollment grew rapidly as people returned to take advantage of the GI Bill.
For many years, the school was unofficially known as State College but the board chose to name the school North Carolina State College of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh in 1963. The name was very unpopular and in 1965, the name of the school became North Carolina State University at Raleigh. Today, there are more than 34,000 students enrolled at the school which ranks highly in such publications as the Princeton Review, USA Today and US News & World Report.
