Applied Behavior Analysis is a therapy that is based on learning and behavior. It helps people understand how behavior works, how it is impacted by the environment and how learning takes place. ABA therapy provides an understanding of how behavior works in real situations. It is used to assist those who are developmentally disabled by increasing communication skills, improving attention social skills and academics while providing methods to decrease problem behaviors. In order to work as an Applied Behavior Analyst in most states, individuals must have at least a bachelor’s degree and could be required to hold a master’s degree. North Carolina Central University offers a degree program that could lead to certification as an Applied Behavior Analyst.

North Carolina Central University offers a Special Education program with a focus on behavioral emotional disabilities, learning disabilities and visual impairments. The program prepares graduates for licensure to teach those with disabilities, to address issues of language and cultural diversity as well as their families and social circles. The Master of Education program leads to advanced licensure for those who already hold a license in education or special education who also have one year of teaching experience. Students may concentrate their studies in Visual Impairment, Orientation and Mobility or Vocational Rehabilitation Therapy.,

The Master of Arts in Teaching is a 39-54 hour program for those who have a background in education but are not licensed to teach. The program provides an understanding of special populations, adapting curriculum, assessing candidates, writing IEPs and instructional methodology. Upon completion, graduates receive an initial license in Special Education General Curriculum. They may also obtain an advance license by concentrating in Behavioral/Emotional Disabilities, Learning Disabilities or Visual Impairment.

An online Master’s in School Counseling is also offered.

About North Carolina Central University

In 1909, the National Religious Training School and Chautauqua for the Colored Race was founded by James E. Shepard. Chautauqua used entertainment, religion and well-known speakers in community settings to educate adults. Woodrow Wilson, who would become President of the United States, contributed privately to the school.

The school was purchased using funds from philanthropist Margaret Olivia Slocum in 1915. It was reorganized as the National Training School and designed to educate black teachers. At the time, education for African Americans was severely underfunded. The school was renamed the Durham State Normal School in 1923 but kept the goal to educate teachers. A liberal arts program was added in 1925 which led the name to change to the North Carolina College for Negros.

In 1947, the name of the school was changed to North Carolina College at Durham and became North Carolina Central University in 1969. The school has been ranked by Onlinemasters.com as one of the nation’s top online master’s programs. Best Value Schools ranks the online Bachelor of Criminal Justice as one of the best in the country. The school has been named an Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

North Carolina Central University is the first in the University of North Carolina system to offer a degree in Jazz Studies. It was also the first black college to offer liberal arts studies. The school has two state-of-the-art biotechnology research facilities and the NCCU Art Museum houses one of North Carolina’s leading collections of work by African-American artists. US News & World Report ranked the School of Law as one of the 10 most popular law schools.

North Carolina Central University Application Requirements

Applicants may be admitted unconditionally if they have an undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or 3.0 in the last 30 semester hours of undergraduate work. In order to apply for the Master of Education program, they must hold an undergraduate degree and a valid teaching license. They must provide official GRE scores, letters of recommendation and a current resume as well.

North Carolina Central University Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition at North Carolina Central University is $466 per credit hour for North Carolina residents and $2,054.38 for non-residents. Graduate tuition is $692.50 per credit hour for residents and $2,311.75 per credit hour for non-residents.

Financial aid is available and is offered through the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid. In order to qualify, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the form must be renewed annually. Students may be offered grants, loans or work-study programs. They may also be offered subsidized or unsubsidized loans. Parent PLUS loans may also be used to offset the cost of education.
