Edinboro University of Pennsylvania originated in 1857 when Scottish settlers opened Edinboro Academy as the state’s first higher education institution west of the Alleghenies. That Fall, Principal Joel Merriman welcomed an inaugural class of 110 to the two-story Academy Hall. In 1861, it was acquired by the Commonwealth and renamed the Northwest State Normal School. In 1914, the PA General Assembly signed legislation making it the Edinboro State Normal School. Fourteen years later, Edinboro added four-year bachelor’s degrees and became a State Teachers College. Regionally accredited in 1949, it was called Edinboro State College in 1960 as arts and sciences degrees grew. In 1983, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania was officially born within the 14-campus PASSHE system. In 1999, the School of Education started fulfilling the six PDE credits required for teachers under Act 48.

On June 25, 2015, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) removed the compliance warning for Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and satisfactorily reaffirmed the Level VI accreditation through 2023-24 under its 19th president, Dr. Michael Hannan, who earned the Northeastern Association of Business, Economics & Technology Reviewer of the Year Award. Headquartered 409 miles east via Interstate 76 in Philadelphia, this superb six-state Mid-Atlantic Region accreditor is recognized by the U.S. Education Department to evaluate Edinboro’s 109 baccalaureate and 16 graduate degrees. M.A. in School Counseling cohorts must satisfy 12 prerequisite credits of psychology courses, including Human Development. The Ed.S. in School Psychology seeks 3.0 GPAs and GRE scores in the 30th percentile.
